Bachelor of Dance Education

Course Description

Dance

Become a High School Dance Teacher with a Bachelor of Dance Education from ACPE

If dance is your life than make it your career. Do you love dance, movement, and sport and want to teach them? Read on!

The aim of the Bachelor of Dance Education Degree is to prepare you to teach dance in the secondary education system or to apply your knowledge and skills in other educational contexts. PDHPE is offered as a parallel field of study to allow students to gain a qualification in a second teaching method. Students are therefore tapping into the strength of ACPE and achieving a qualification for a key learning area in secondary schools.

The Bachelor of Dance Education has NSW Department of Education and NSW Institute of Teachers accreditation. The degree is unique in Australia in that it positions the study and practice of dance as an art form within the broader context of physical activity and physical expression.

Students can simultaneously broaden their experience in dance and in physical education in an environment focusing on educational pedagogy. Both areas are supported by the study of personal development, health and the anatomy of the human body.

The Bachelor of Dance Education is designed to take four years of full-time study. A maximum of eight years is allowed for students to complete the degree part-time. The degree program is divided into eight semesters, each of 12 weeks teaching duration. Study involves approximately 16 contact hours a week excluding examination and study weeks. The course is taught via lectures, tutorials, dance classes, performance workshops, seminars and individual tuition. Students also complete four professional experience sessions in a range of schools.

Is the degree for me?

The degree caters for those seeking a career as teachers of Dance and PDHPE in secondary schools, as well as those seeking other professional careers associated with Dance or Dance Education. It will feed and nurture your passion for movement and challenge your assumptions on both dance and the teaching of it. You'll become a better dancer to become a better teacher.

It also aims to provide graduates with a foundation on which they might continue a lifelong development of skills and attributes appropriate for professional teachers.
