Sport and physical fitness has been the major focus of my life and I have worked in and around the sporting world for close to 30 years. Starting out as a secondary school Science teacher, my background as an elite athlete representing Australia in Cross Country, meant I was soon coaching in schools. At the time I didn’t realise that this was the beginning of a new and exciting career in coaching. Over the next few years I worked towards my Level V accreditation in middle and long distance and began to develop my own system of coaching & all round athlete development.
My success as an athletics coach saw me appointed in 1998 to the High Performance Program of Athletics Australia where I worked as a professional coach in the Tasmanian, NSW and Australian Institutes of Sport over the next six years. A very special and exciting period during this time was my role as Distance Coach for the 2000 T&F Paralympic team. Working with blind marathon runners and other athletes with a disability was incredibly rewarding and challenging – as a coach you give without expecting anything in return, but in this case I received so much more from my athletes in terms of both my professional and personal growth.
During my time as a Professional Coach and Manager of Australian teams I was privileged to work with some of the best coaches and athletes in world and also studied the coaching methods/systems of Morocco, Russia, USA, Spain, Kenya and England. My roles as Manager of the Australian Athletics Teams to the Commonwealth Games 2002, World Championships 2003 and Olympic Games in Athens 2004 were major highlights in my professional career and after the ‘high’ of the Athens Olympics I decided it was time for a new challenge.
This involved becoming a qualified Fitness Professional with my own very unique business, naturally called Dinamic fitness, a combination of fitness training and athlete development. Somewhere in the middle of this I spent a bit of time in Kenya coaching and managing a group of Kenyan athletes. This included 2000 Olympic Steeple Chase Gold Medallist Ruben Kosgei, who during this period won a bronze medal in the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
This brings me to 2009 and my latest passion of passing on my knowledge and experience to the students of ACPE in both the coaching and fitness degrees. Perhaps this is the perfect job because by educating so many great coaches and fitness professionals at ACPE, sport and fitness in this country is looking pretty good!
In my spare time I make sure I keep up with all the recent trends in coaching and fitness by working towards my Masters in Coach Education at Sydney Uni, being a member of the Coaching Advisory Committee for Athletics Australia, coaching my own squad of athletes and training a few personal clients.
So what is my career highlight to date? As a coach and teacher, being part of sport and education at whatever level and knowing that I have been a significant influence and inspiration to many young people. But as a mother my career highlights are my two amazing kids!
