Description

The Bachelor of Health Science (Community Health) opens doors to a range of dynamic careers that are in high demand to meet the ever-increasing needs of communities both in Australia and internationally.

This degree will equip you to foster a society that uses exercise and lifestyle choices to reduce illness and disease. You will study the historical, social and cultural factors that cause poor health, focusing on the most vulnerable community groups in Australia and their specific health priorities.

What is involved in Community Health?

Community health roles involve the promotion and protection of people's health. The Community Health major allows you to explore health outcomes based on a sociological perspective. You learn about the multitude of complexities associated with promoting health, including investigating the socio-cultural issues in health and exploring how experiences shape an individual's level of knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about health. This major also familiarises students with a range of ethical issues, common treatments of diseases, psychology and its application to health, strategic planning, statistics and research methods.

The Bachelor of Health Science (Community Health) is divided into three major study areas -

  • The Determinants of Health (Core) Stream introduces students to health promotion principles and provides an understanding of the social, psychological and cultural factors influencing general health and wellbeing.
  • The Bioscience (Core) Stream provides a background in the structure and function of the human body and explores the concepts of exercise physiology.
  • The Community Health (Major) Stream provides students with an understanding of health from a determinants approach by examining the socio-cultural factors influencing general health and wellbeing of specific groups and individuals in the community.
